The Canine Coronavirus (CCV Ag) Rapid Test detects canine coronavirus antigens in stool samples, with results available within 5 to 10 minutes. Canine coronavirus is distinct from SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) and does not infect humans.
For dog breeders, the main benefit of this test is to help distinguish a canine coronavirus infection, which is generally milder, from canine parvovirus infection, as the early clinical signs can be similar while the severity and required management can differ significantly.

What Is Canine Coronavirus?
Canine coronavirus (CCV) is an intestinal virus transmitted primarily through the fecal-oral route and is relatively common in groups of dogs. In most cases, it causes mild to moderate gastroenteritis that resolves spontaneously.
The main concern is co-infection with canine parvovirus, which may significantly worsen the clinical condition of an affected puppy.
Why Is Canine Coronavirus Testing Relevant in Dog Breeding Facilities?
- Helps distinguish between causes of gastrointestinal disease: a generally milder coronavirus infection and potentially severe canine parvovirus infection can produce similar early symptoms. Rapid testing can provide additional information to help guide veterinary assessment and the appropriate level of response.
- Useful when co-infection is suspected: a Canine Parvovirus–Coronavirus Combo Rapid Test can detect both pathogens simultaneously from the same sample.
- Relevant in high-density dog environments: fecal-oral transmission is facilitated where several dogs share spaces and equipment.
Symptoms of Canine Coronavirus Infection
Diarrhoea, generally milder and less likely to be haemorrhagic than with parvovirus · moderate loss of appetite · mild lethargy · occasional vomiting, particularly in puppies
Recommended Testing Approach
- Consider testing for both canine coronavirus and parvovirus in puppies presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms, ideally using a combined Parvovirus–Coronavirus test.
- Increase monitoring when co-infection is confirmed, as the clinical outcome may be less favourable than with an isolated infection.
What to Do If the Test Is Positive
Discuss supportive care with your veterinarian, including hydration and monitoring · isolate the affected dog while active diarrhoea is present · increase monitoring if the dog also tests positive for canine parvovirus.
